Small related question, what does this give you if you're looking at embarking on an arduinome project? I've been looking at picking up a monome on ebay - but since the last 40h went for $1000 I've decided my time isn't worth that much, so I'll make a clone. From what I've read the 40h kits are few and far between, and it seems the only alternative for immediate satisfaction is to go arduinome - is that a correct assumption?
I've been adding to my shopping cart the items listed over at...
http://bricktable.wordpress.com/30/hardware/
What would a shield like this one get me? Keen to try and wrap my head round where to start.
Many thanks -

haha well... I guess we will embark on this project together. I have never built one and have been waiting for this day in order to do so. whisper me your e-mail and we can talk further as we start building. I am planing to document my build as I go so others can follow along. As far as I know the shield is just another board to solder up inbetween the button pads and the arduino d. micro controler. all the pics are at bricktable.

OK, I'm putting in an order with 4pcb later today for 4 shields (there are two of us doing these in our office and I want spares due to being paranoid about breaking stuff).
I've put my order in with sparkfun for the buttons the pcb and the arduino board.
I have a shopping list for digikey that looks like....
Qant Part Number Total
1 MAX7219CNG+ $10.81
1 MM74HC164N $0.54
1 MM74HC165N $0.54
1 ED90050-ND $1.02
1 ED90049-ND $0.89
3 P4910-ND $1.44
1 770-101-R100KP-ND $0.42
1 S1012E-36-ND $1.25
4 P828-ND $0.64
2 ED3124-ND $2.88
128 511-1611-ND $43.06
5,000 RHM24.3HTR-ND $22.50
Subtotal $85.99
(hopefully this renders)
Anything in there look crazy wrong? -

I wish on digikey you could create a parts list that could then be saved and shared. -

you can get the max chip as a sample from the company, thats what i did
and you can create partslist that are saved and make it public... -

Small side note, I just ordered the shield from 4pcb, but when I asked for 4, I didn't understand that that meant 4 + a free one, so middle of next week I might/should have 1 or 2 spares. I'll post a new thread if I do and they will be available for face value of $33 + whatever your shipping is.
That means as far as I can tell I have all the hardware coming, I'm going to put together a quick post on my own blog at some point with what I have coming, hopefully someone might be able to flag if I've missed something obvious. :-) -

Hey guys, im new on the monome scene and would love to build an arduinome.
If you still think you have spares (jpsykes) then i would probably take one off your hands. However i do live in the UK. Postage could be a bit of a problem so i think im gonna start a UK group buy and then if i get nowhere then i'll come back here.
Thanks guys. Good luck with your builds. -

Johnny - I will e-mail you as soon as I get them. should be monday because of the holiday :o)
JPsykes..
did you create partslist that is saved and make it public over there at digi assuming that is possible. If so that would make it super easy for the rest of use to reference with the company that way we dont get some parts mixed up. Thanks for the contribution it is very helpful!
Mer... at my 9-5 and wanting to just go home and make music... as usual.. lol -

thanks Wilcox, I appreciate it.
From what I understand, having this custom sheild isn't required for you to create an Arduinome, it just makes it easier, because it essentially does a lot if the wiring for you. All you need to do is drop in the various components in their designated spots. It also may make things more compact, incasr you are planning on building a thin box. -

thats correct. If you wanted you could just do it all with a breadboard i suppose. This will hopefully make things a sinch so we can all be having arduinomly good time :o)
everyone should post pics along the way. -

@wilcox, I can't see a way to get the parts list public, the digi-key site is appalling so maybe I'm missing something. I listed everything I've ordered on my blog....

I feel like I am watching this Arduinome pass me by. I have been studying a bit on the Arduino chip
and I would like to get involved as well. If you happen to do another group order I would love to be
added to the list.
thanks -

Egon and dovmouse- I will be able to sell off a few pcbs for cost ($33) + shipping as I have orderd like 6 all together.. lol and I am only taking on a project needing 2. I will let you guys know when I get them :o)

also if your a student, you can order a single pcb from 4pcb for 33 plus shipping. the shipping is pretty pricey though (needlessly so). so if you can get one from a member here you end up saving money. -

I should have 2 spares, but I'll post when I know, mine probably won't be "spare" for another week to 10 days. But I'll post here the second they are and they will be available at face value. -

So are these boards 33 bucks a piece? or does one order cost 33 bucks and you get 4 + 1 free?
i am so confused. heh -

Heads up: It took 2 weeks to get my order from 4pcd, 1 week to fab, 1 week UPS ground. Each board is $33, and if you buy 4, you get 1 free -

Appreciate the post, I got anxious this weekend and ended up making my own shield this weekend using a generic pcb from Radioshack, it was a painful ugly experience but its works! Thanks to the excellent schematics and information posted by everyone here on the forums and of course the entire monome team! -
