Here's a video showing off some of the latest features added to SevenUp live:
http://www.vimeo.com/2411779
A lot has improved since it was released in August and I want to give a special thanks to archetype303, snarehanger, emergencyofstate, Doostin, barnone for their feedback and helping me shape the app (and thanks to anyone who donated :)

so I just realized there is no 128 version of sevenup live. I was considering giving it a go till I noticed that.
but I know you can run 2 apps half and half on a 128, what are people pairing with sevenup live as a half n half combo on a 128/256? I'd love for some ideas before I start stumbling around in the dark. -

You could be the first person to run two instances of 7up at once on one device -

Agreed. Seeing this video has made me go "ah hah!" about the functionality/practical use of choke groups, and the potential of clip launch mode is huge.
@Lukas - from 'New Application - SevenUpLive....' thread
Yes, I've definitely had problem with my IAC Drivers crapping out. It mostly seems to happen with the stepper which is coming through on IAC Bus 2 if I recall. The only way to get it working again is to restart. I wonder if this would cease to happen if we used MIDI Pipe instead? I don't know much about the reliability of IAC and/or 3rd party virtual MIDI ports. -

hi there,
first of all i´d like to say thank you. Seven up is the bomb!
Sadly i have a pretty bad issue going on regarding latency.
i like to use external hardware, especialy my machinedrum has to be on everything i do. sadly i can´t use it with seven up becasue i have latency up to a quarter note, which is a lot.
am i the only one experiencing this? any chance to get around this except for prerecording the machinedrum?
thanks, hr -

- CommentTimeDec 3rd 2008
@Herrreinholt - I use a MD as well the only sync solution I found was to record it in Live then trigger clips of the MD. I believe there's a pretty bad sync issue when running the MD synced to Live. It was running my MD at 2 times the tempo. Sucked. -
- CommentAuthorphortran
- CommentTimeDec 3rd 2008
hey guys, not sure if you have tried this or not but expand the midi out in ableton you're using to send sync to MD and adjust the latency slider. negative my overall latency works for me, but you might try other values as well until it syncs up nicely. -

@mtn , were you joking about having two instances of 7up running on a 128? i'd gladly give that a go... would I just double up the IAC busses?
actually this won't work because the prefixes will both be set to box? I have done this before and both sides replicate each other. -
-
CommentAuthormakingthenoise
- CommentTimeDec 3rd 2008 edited
Doostin, you can change the prefix that SevenUp uses in the initialization screen.
Although I just realized you can't open 2 instances of MonomeSerial. Really all we would need is a small modification to MonomeSerial to accept OSC commands from multiple prefixes and apply them to other columns/rows. -

@makingthenoise
Use Serial-PyIO rather than monomeserial
create 2 instances of 128 devices
create 2 applications with different prefixes and ports
The only thing I had trouble with was the offset which is listed but I couldn't edit it. Instead I marked one device with "Top" cord and one with "Bottom" cord.
So if you choose 7UpLive for app1 device1 and Polygome for app2 device 2, then they both run on separate sides of the 128. However, one is upside down.
I'll play more later but offset should be editable which would solve this.
[edit] Actually not working that great. I got 7up live and Polygome running together with setting one device "left" cable and one "right". Polygome set to "right" runs upside down. Has responsiveness issues though. Haven't tried quadrants. It's no big whoop for me. Juts an experiment. -

Well I've finally found an app that breaks my Lemur Monome emulator. Seems it can't handle the fast blinking refresh on the pads in 7upLive. Two issues here. One is that the emulation is just slower..Converting protocols and also communication is 2 hop from Lemur to MAX to app. I know there is also a timing bug in the emulation which when getting too much data causes partial refresh.
I say..No Big Deal. I love the addition of blinking as an indicator of different states in 7UpLive. More power to that. I'll use the Lemur for other apps.
Not sure if Serial-PyIO has similar perf problems.
Might max out even native protocol if trying on a 256 version.
Here's a great case for variable brightness or color changes.
I could write a Lemurized version that used color or something else for state instead of blinking, but why bother. The monome version is perfect. Kudos to that. -

sorry for not reading the manual...but is there a way to record audio loops into this on the fly and then manipulate them mlr style?
EDIT: looks like i could use this with monome basic or pages to record loops and then record launching the loops...which is close to what i want.
damn liveapi and the missing follow action bits -

- CommentAuthorDooSTin
- CommentTimeDec 4th 2008 edited
you would have to record/resample your loop, consolidate it and then drag into the looper. from there use the loop recorder to define loop points, just check out loop recorder section in the manual!
anyone had any luck with quadrants on mac? I'm using the latest monomeserial. i get max errrors that say can't bind to port 8010. i've followed the instructions to the T. i saw windows users were having better results with an earlier version of monomeserial...I'd really like to try getting two instances of 7up going! -

@ griotspeak - you can record loops on the fly using the clip launch page, and then drag them into a sample slot in the looper chain. I think it would also be possible to use the clip launch page to record 8 very short loops in succession, each a quarter note long, and then select them all and set the follow action to next (except for the 8th one which will be set to first).
@ MTN - I just thought of a way around having to consolidate clips to get the length right for the looper. Consolidating means you have to stop the song and switch to the arrangement view. Instead, just resample it. you just need a second track recording from the samples track.
I think ableton live needs a way to define the settings of a clip before its recorded; you give a clip slot settings that will affect the clip recorded into it, like loop length, follow actions, etc. you can already do this with midi clips, since they support overdubbing. -

@houseofstrange: tentative plans for tilt control next week. I don't have a 64 myself so I'll just post a beta version in this thread and people can let me know if I got it right.
@griotspeak: lukas pretty much answered everything. If you want to create/chop loops on the fly you can use the resample track to record what you're doing, then drag the newly created loop onto the looper and you're all set (read the instructions for some caveats though).
I wish there was a way to record directly INTO the looper drum pad, saving you a step, but as far as I know that isn't possible with Live. -

i'm assuming this was answered at some point...but i felt like asking anyways. I noticed once that when I put a clip into live that's longer than 4 bars, it'll just keep starting over when it gets to 5. In the new features video, the part regarding the patch packs, i noticed in arrangement view that the midi clock tracks' midi is stretched out far beyond 4 bars. So...can I just stretch the midi clock track out as far as I choose in order to play clips that are longer than 4 bars? -
-
-
CommentAuthormakingthenoise
- CommentTimeDec 4th 2008
SnareHanger: stretching the MIDI clock track out wouldn't extend the length of your loop, it just gives you more room if you want to actually drop samples/change envelopes in session view
regarding your problem, i dont even see how that's possible. The looper will always send offsets 0%, 12.5%, 25%, 37.5% .... 87.5% basically playing through 100% of whatever audio file you drag in. No matter what size.
so I'm a little confused, feel free to email me some screen shots or something if you want to dive into this. arribaud at gmail dot com -

I'm not referring to the looper.
Back before you added the clip launch functionality I added a track so I could have a vocal clip throughout the entire song, but it would just keep repeating the first 4 bars of the clip. I'm assuming that's because the transport clock keeps repeating. That make sense? -
-
-
CommentAuthormakingthenoise
- CommentTimeDec 4th 2008
oh that makes a lot more sense, yea that sounds about right. You can drag the MIDI clocks a far as you want. Like you saw at the end of video, I have a 40min set with 7up running throughout. It's kind of the best of both worlds: you get a structured set with the the freedom to jam at any time. -

good to know.
I'll have to do that. I was gonna be disappointed if I was stuck with 4 bars, but once again, you have not disappointed me.
Now...all I have to do is fix the 3 LEDs that are out on my monome, so I can actually tell what I'm doing. -

SO, I have two instances of SevenUp running on my 128. I bailed on quadrants and am using the pre-release app hub (thanks soundcyst). I've even got it running through pages :)
here are a few issues:
1) the right side, (second prefix) does not have the midi clock, or the flashing row scroll through. I get all the same fuctionality in the stepper, looper, etc.
2) the right side again, the solid led for selecting the menu will not stay on. basically you hve to try to remember which mode your in
3) occasionally when you switch to masterizer and then back to stepper or looper or any mode you get a whole bunch of random leds light up. then they kind of clear away as that midi clock scrolls by. it will even occasionally light up a row on the other side (no effect to the sounds and while in pattern mode)
4) in sequencer mode, by default the left most column LEDs are on. well on this right side, its kind of cool what happens - each led will alternate after each cycle giving you a running representation of what ever 1/2 bar your on. (every 8 rows is 1/2 a bar for me)
any ideas? this is so much fun, wow. looking forward to the theremin edition, can we plug a SX150 into it as well? -

that orange bar is MIDI assignable. So just go into MIDI mapping mode (the MIDI button in the top right), click on that orange bar, and then press a slider and bingo! -

theremin/tilt sensor, i see no difference :) im still dreaming!
I'm trying to get midiStroke (like Bome's) to recognize a note on/off from the clip launchers. This is what i'd be testing. Monome button = 1/B5, which is note #95 ( I believe). I have to set it to receive on the IAC bus that melodizer 1 is set to correct? I have it working on a Kontrol49 but am struggling with the monome. -

@emergency: click on stepper channel, then what you do is go into midi map. make sure you can see the device chains. what your gonna do is midi map the chain selector. so, in midi map mode - click on numbered section 0-127 this is highlighted in blue. then on the monome, push and hold the buttom slider button, continue to hold and repeat pushing each button. you will see the mapping change to a range of midi notes. -

for some reason once i assign the slider to the orange bar it only jumps in big increments (from 0 to 16 then 32, 48 etc) -
