Woha !
Could this be the first step in Monome's going mainstream, will all the normal people I meet finally understand what I'm jibbering about?
It's airing Friday, set your DVR's. -

you know what we should do? do a quick count of how many people are in the community right now, then how much it grows after the letterman thing. see what's what.... -

Even more questions when i bring mine out in public or did you see her use it and thats why you have one (face palm) haha if you are considering buying one nows the time to do it. Are we going to see extreme inflation again? -

ok...this i dont like...at all!
could somebody talk to her? the whole point of this place was to keep it minimal! lol...she doesn't even come on here. i mean if shes such a devote monome user, atleast be true to the game...i love her music, but cmon. -

Trent had a monome on the recent NIN tour - and a lot of people saw that!
I just can't wait for viewers to be like- "what the hell is THAT thing??"
Is she using a 256 or a 64? Does anybody know?
(Immi - feel free to answer this question and become part of the community!!)
DVR set as well- in HD too - so I can see exactly how she has it set up... -

http://post.monome.org/account.php?u=2600
Current count, 2600 - that's weirdly way more than I expected.
I don't think this is a bad thing, how can it be? You don't use an interface because it's obscure and weird, but because it's good at what it does.
She has been on here a few times, mainly prior to her TED talk, everyone was very helpful. If I remember correctly she only got her's as part of the last batch of 256's so that's only a month or so.
Do you have to be a devote Monome user to be a monome user. I think I missed that part in the checkout process.
There are a plethora of other "well known" artists who have and use Monome's. I only really thought this was note worthy since Letterman is about as mainstream America as you can get.
I say it's great, I'm all for Monome getting awesome press, by innovative artists who clearly love to make music.
yay ! -

@JP
my error...i missed that one comment she left on that thread.
when i saw the monome, i did everything i could to get it. i invested many hours learning and using mlr. just because its so obscure and weird. why does anyone else love the monome so much?
i can find a bunch of other programs that can do the same job the same way, but without the interface. i can also find many kinks in most of the max patches...but thats what makes it so wonderful.
this community is by far the best thing that ive encountered on the internet...because its just minimal. and from what i understand, its what brian intended in the first place. if he wanted to mass produce the monome, im sure with some capital, he would be able to do it. but he didnt. and i love him for that ;)
the idea of having a small, devout user base makes this place unbelievable.
i welcome and appreciate imogen's addition to the community with open arms. i just find the idea of presenting it on national television to hurt the idea of monome. if you need more explanation on what im trying to say. then i give up lol -

@simcitizzon
I love the monome because I think it's a great instrument, and has a great open ended architecture that fosters this fantastic community.
I don't think it's a bad thing for the monome to get exposure. More people mean more people making music and more people contributing and possibly innovating. Sure... you might be losing your "obscure and weird" instrument status, but it doesn't make the monome any less an instrument.
I don't know what Brian's original intentions were, but I've always seen it as a fair business that preaches open architecture and sustainability in business practices. I see the minimalist approach to pertain mostly to aesthetics, but not to be against the spread of their products. -

....
i think... it's kinda weird... no? everyone loves the button machine, but i think what really really makes me love monome is the idea of monome. when i think of MONOME i don't jump automatically to the box... i get this whole feelin of community, of belonging to something... being able to talk to people that don't put one of those "what the fuck are you talking about right now?" faces...
this is monome. monome is half in the box, half out of the box. it's too bad imogen hasn't been around enough to get a real sense of the community.. but i'm sure we'll see her around.
either way, i hope she kicks ass on letterman. rock that monome ms. heap, and rock it hard!
now, i get what simcitizzon is sayin'. but i think this community is open enough to accept a couple of hundred (thousand? jajaja) new members... just means the family is getting bigger. everyone here knows the only people that really stick around are people that have the same ideals.
as for "going mainstream" or not... i don't think brian or ms. cain wanna mass produce anything... so that's cool.
and those were my 2 cents... hahahaha.
p.s. 2600?? damn!!!! -

Well if they don't mass produce them just think of how much more yours will be worth. BUT YOU WONT SELL IT, and neither will i. But yea... Letterman... Really? That's kind of lame.. She should go on Conan with it HAHA. Now that i would watch. They could use in the Conan please blow up my car contest to detonate the car. -

i recall seeing the all youtube comments for the original 40h demo video. lots of "wuts wit all the buttons" and "wtf is that alien thing", etc.
i think that the really awesome people have probably already discovered monome (ahem, everyone here), and if a few television watchers join in on the fun, that's cool.
i'm predicting some really confused americans in front of the ol' TV though hehe

my mum watches leterman. now she is cool but i dont think she is going to be franticly rushing to buy. I think she is pretty representative of the show's demographic. I have just started working with a guitarist and he loves my 128 but prefer's to spend brain power figuring out all his freaky peddle's. It's horses for course's. I think his loop peddle is fantastic but do not plan to run out and get one. Who is this girl anyway? She is not so popular in england. -

I can't see it being too overblown, some people will think it is a tenori, And I don't see tenori sales shoot up when little boots (i think it was her) turns up on Jonathan Ross with it sat completely in the forground!
I am not really sure why people are so worried by it, it is starting to sound like having one is a status symbol, rather than being an interesting machine!
I don't think we should be looking at elitism with it anyway! -

I haven't watched late night TV or poked my head into the monome forums in months. Somewhat accidentally doing the former prompted me to do the latter.

Great performance I thought. incorporating the piano was nice. Letterman seemed impressed when he ran his fingers acrosses it and it started making noises.
Almost made me miss my 256. -

awesome performance, i'm surprised at how much the monome was incorporated into the performance given that she's only had it for a little while. i thought it went off really smooth too.
for people curious about software, i'm not 100% sure what was being used, this is about as much as i know:
"I'm just trying to get Imogen's set up ready and we're going to be using Pages, twice! So, we are running two instances of Pages and some other apps within hub"
hopefully she'll drop by soon and share her complete setup with us. -

Good dish dvr sucks, due to the baseball over running or whatever it was, I only had the first 30 minutes of it.
Anyone see a full quality copy of the show, just watching the one linked above. -
