I'm sorry, I'm not a technical person. I can work a computer, and I can do a whole lot with Reason, but that's about it. That being said, I'm really interested in a monome but am too afraid to jump right in and by one on the salary of highschool student. Which is why I became really excited upon seeing this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8Rnkbcjr4M
It's a video of some guy who's "testing some monome apps before making the plunge". It looks something like a monome emulator or something that he's using on reason. You can see about halfway through the clip that there is a Subtractor under it. The app says it was "modified by kempton m."
Does anybody know what this thing is? I've been doing some googlin' for about an hour now and can't find much. Is it ridiculously difficult to setup? Does it work on Windows XP? Is this an obvious question that everyone here knows the answer to? Am I wasting your time?
If somebody could get back to me I would really appreciate it, I'll check back here later -

By the way, I guess I should emphasize that I would only be using this to test it out. If I can use it/learn to through the program use it I'm totally getting a real one -

the app you saw was part of the monome base package available here:
http://monome.org/data/app/base
you will need the max/msp runtime to use it.
http://www.cycling74.com/downloads/maxmsp (free)
in the 'routers' folder of the monome base package, there is a file called monome40h_fake.mxb, double click it, then open any other *.mxb patch and you will have a system similar to what you would have with a real monome device. -

or you could try this one which is implemented in pd.....

(I've tested the pd emulator with apps running in max/msp runtime and chuck). -

I'm the guy who posted the youtube video. I took the "fake" monome app included in the base package and i edited it by mapping the buttons to computer keyboard keys. I also did one mapping the buttons to a mp3 buttons. The reason for this is I wanted to get a feel for what it was like to trigger multiple things at the same time, which you couldn't do with the standard "fake". I'd be glad to post the modified app if it would be helpful to people. -

seriously, i would have been wayyyyyy more down with a multi-touch mac tablet that's ultra portable than this macbook air business.
anyone else find the price points of the two different models amusing?
sure, the high end one has an SSD hard drive, but that doesn't change the level of amusement i get from seeing base model at $1799 and the next step up at $3000+
wtg apple. -

TOTALLY. wtf?
I want my 13" multitouch hybrid. the macbook is already portable enough.. nobody cares about a 1.2ghz machine unless it has something special like multitouch. hell, do what the modbook did and make as thick as a mackbook so we can have the 2.6 c2d. i just want my macbook to work like my iphone.
no wonder apples stock dropped after the keynote... everyone is disappointed.
sometimes apple is just mediocre... that being said.. i love leopard on my 15" pro... -

alright, I posted my modified "fake" monome on my site, here is a link:
http://www.geocities.com/fkmooney/apps/__40h_fake_w_holdv2.mxb
Just take the file and put it in the base folder with the other "fake". The mod is that i mapped row 2 to 12345678, row 3 to qwertyui, row 4 to asdfghjk, row 5 to zxcvbnm,, and then 6 is qwerty with the shift on, and so on. row one is 0-=(del)[](up)(dow). I did it this way because i wanted to try MLR.
I also have another version mapped to an mpc, as well as some other little apps on my site located here:

Brian, if you don't like the idea of emulators floating around, I'm glad to take them down, just let me know. I am hoping to get a 40h this round, so I won't have much use for them after that! -

one additional note. The monome blinker I have for download has a grid that can be mapped to keyboards, midi, etc. if anyone with PureData skills wants to take the time. It should be pretty easy and straightforward to do. Here's the link again, jsut to avoid any confusion:

i couldn't get you keyboard fakeome to work. there's also no slot for a prefix. is that an issue? looks handy though. -

Not quite sute where a prefix would go. I'm not a real wizard with Max, but I can tell you that I use the patch with a mac powerbook, it doesn't matter whether I was was using the attached keyboard or a peripheral typing keyboard plugged in through USB. You shouldn't need to run monoserial or anything, just the "fake" and whatever app you are using, for example mlr or flin. The "fake" patch is jsut taking the typing key info and mapping it to one of the fake buttons. -

I was able to get "fake_w_holdv2" to work with _flip. But can't get it to respond to mlr. Which mlr version are you using? -

with MLR, I found that the standalone was the easiest to run -

the "fake_w_holdv2" should be able to communicate with the apps whose prefix is /box, but it may be necessary to tweak the patch so that it can accept other prefixes. Sorry, I am not a max expert and do not know the full details of routing data, but I have been messing around with creating patches in puredata with /box prefix and things have been able to communicate well. Also, for some reason, I was able to flin, muon, and life (chuck version) to run fine. For these I was just running the "fake_w_holdv2" and, for example, flin. No monoserial or anythign else. -
