SevenUpLive 1.4 beta4 is now available to download.
http://www.makingthenoise.com/sevenup/SevenUpLiveOSX-v1.4beta4.tar.gz
http://www.makingthenoise.com/sevenup/SevenUpLiveWindows-v1.4beta4.zip
Previous Beta is at
http://www.makingthenoise.com/sevenup/SevenUpLiveOSX-v1.4beta3.tar.gz
http://www.makingthenoise.com/sevenup/SevenUpLiveWindows-v1.4beta3.zip
Beta 4 really takes the melodizers off the hook.
- All patterns on both melodizers are independently accessible at once from multiple views on multiple monomes or different grids on a 128 /256s etc. This allows you to interact with as many patterns and instruments at once as you have button-estate. Multiple performers can work off the same live set for some awesome collaboration.
- Each pattern can be independently transposed by scale degree or key. However now you can create transpose groups where groups will transpose together. These groups will bind across melodizers for the ability to create some really amazing movements within your patterns.
- Different transpose modes GATE/SUSTAIN which allow old notes to either be gated or sustained after a transposition.
Beta 3 adds a lot of new scales
Remember it's a beta so there will be bugs. Backup any existing patches first before loading.
The big new feature here is improvements to the Melodizers.
Transposing of notes within a scale by key and also modes of the scale. Transpositions can effect both live and recorded patterns.
New Melodizer modes.
- Keyboard for changing keys.
- Position bar for moving by degrees in a scale.
- Ability to have no tools at the bottom for example when using to trigger samples.
- Ability to chose a mode and alternate mode. Toggle by hitting the solid nav light twice.
Two example videos
First Video transposing chords while playing live

Second Video transposing patterns + live notes playing live

Use this thread for discussing the Beta Only please. Use the other 7up threads for normal support questions.
Look for stuck midi notes and quirks like that and please report them. Thanks! -

mac osx version isn't working at home. 1.2 works well but i can't make tu 1.4 working. Lauching the jar is ok, the 7 is blinking, the channel in Live are correctly set up (clock, channel 8 for every midi track) etc ... , but the sequencer bar isn't running when i push play in ableton.

Because it's a fresh version, your preferences have changed. Make sure you set it up same as 1.2. Check all the midi port settings and especially the PREFIX! -

prefix is ok (7up), the melodizers are working (but only on channel 1), but the looper and sequencer isn't working. It seems to be a clock problem. My clock setting is on IAC 2 (my midi clock by defaut in live) and channel 8. Into midi monitor, i've got that :
23:08:11.618 From Bus IAC 2 Note Off 1 F7 64
23:08:11.618 From Bus IAC 2 Note Off 1 E7 64
23:08:11.618 From Bus IAC 2 Note On 1 D#4 101
23:08:11.618 From Bus IAC 2 Note On 1 C7 101
23:08:11.618 From Bus IAC 2 Note On 1 F7 101
23:08:11.618 From Bus IAC 2 Note On 1 E7 101
23:08:11.650 From Bus IAC 2 Note Off 1 E7 64

Usually you set it up with the clock sending to IAC 1. "Midi Input Device" in SevenUp panel set to IAC 1. Clock track "External Instrument" sending to IAC 1 ch8.
Stepper sends to IAC 2
Looper IAC 3
Melodizer 1 IAC 4
Melodizer 2 IAC 5
BTW..your old Live sets should still work. No need to setup a new set from the distro. -

Hello!
what is "Transpose Patterns"? -
-
-
CommentAuthorbar|none
- CommentTimeOct 4th 2009
With "Transpose Patterns" off, touching the Keyboard or the Position bar will transpose the playing grid into a new key or degrees offset in the scale you have chosen.
You can hold down pads and hit the Position Bar for instance and the held notes will be retriggered at the new pitch(scale offset) for some great chord changes.
If you record-enable a pattern slot and play while transposing, all these pitches will be captured in the recording.
However, when playing back the pattern, the notes are always played back as captured and they are not transposed further by interacting with the keyboard or position bar. What does happen is if you are watching the grid and you move the position bar of a running pattern, the lights of the pattern will shift as the grid does, inorder to maintain the notes as captured.
with "Transpose Patterns" turned ON. Interacting with the Keyboard or Position bar on a running recorded pattern will live transpose the currently playing notes in the pattern.
My suggestion is to play first with "Transpose Patterns" OFF to get the hang of it, then try turning it on. I would also choose the "Keyboard/Position" option which lets you toggle between Keys and Position Bar at the bottom by double-tapping the solid nav light in the right nav column when in a Melodizer.
All pattern slots transpose independently.
A few Rules to guide you.
1. Notes are always recorded AT the pitch you hear them play at when you are recording them. After that, the original notes are NEVER altered and are saved and loaded at this pitch always.
2. If you record in a certain scale like "Minor 7", you can freely transpose up and down and across positions while maintaining all notes. However, if you change a recorded scale to another scale, say change "Minor 7" to "Pentatonic", rule #1 above still applies. As you transpose, notes that cannot be transposed to the new scale are dropped and do not play. This can be a cool effect, but if you don't want it, you have to rerecord the pattern using the new scale.
3. With "Transpose Patterns" on, the Key and Position that are active when the pattern slot recording is ended, becomes the root of the live transpose, so transpositions on that active playing pattern become relative to this postion.
NOTE: I may change this and make it choose the position at the start of recording or something, or somehow make it user assignable. Beta feedback could help here.
Have Fun! -

hi mtn/bar|none! i've been using 1.3.1 a couple of days now and it's amazing! just one thing i wanted to find out, not sure if this has been asked before - are there any plans to support inner loops in the looper mode? -

You mean being able to shorten a loop to a smaller step range or even reverse it mlr style?
I'll admit it's not on the list, but pitch it to us. I keep wondering if we are missing certain features from our looper that make people run back to mlr. -

bar|none: yes, exactly. that's what i miss most from using mlr, and what attracted me to it in the first place. it's definitely more powerful than say, setting up clips+follow actions in ableton.
i think it's awesome for live "train-of-thought" improv, and it gives access to quick sublooping with single keypresses (well actually two). speed in execution is key.
soundcyst: that's great, something to look forward to! i'll keep an eye for updates, i can help test if needed. -

might as well write down my wishlist for the looper. it's not much, really :)
note: these are just personal preferences. hopefully some of them are shared by some people too.
1. inner loops (as above)
2. left to right. i tried flipping the orientation to the side (so the rightmost column becomes the topmost row), and it's okay except the row order is bottom to top, unlike mlr's top to bottom. that can be quite confusing if i use 7up and mlr interchangeably.
i suppose it's a minor issue, and i think i can change this manually? maybe remap midi assignments?
3. i am not fully decided on this yet, but when i mute a looper pattern (in masterizer), i find that i want the affected tracks to keep playing (as a loop played normally) instead of stopping.
4. play backwards (as in backmask effect, not play slices in reverse order) - possibly covered by inner loops
5. variable quantization when playing with slices. or is this ableton-dependent?
3/4 would be nice too! good for waltzy swing jazz stuff.
i really dont have anything to say about the other modes as they fit my needs very well indeed. great job - can't stress that enough. -

man this sounds fantastic !!!!!!!!!!!!! givin this a go now asahp ... can't quite figure out how i would set up with all 3 kinds of monomes connected .. so for the moment i'll test with just the 256
not quite sure how i have to set this up since i am using pages for routing molar to the 3 different monomes, so i can't use column offset in monomeserial i guess ...
any tips on setting up the 64/128/256 7up madness with pages ? -

when i hit the record the led state changes and i can punch in/out recording it seems but no notes get recorded although i hear them when i play them ...
any ideas ?
i'm on the MacPro with OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.1 monomeserial .2 and pages 1.3.8 in Live 8.0.5 -

>having problems with recording ..
That's mighty strange. I just redownloaded and tested here and tried as many options as I could and it's recording fine.
1. Transport is running right? Stepper is stepping? Recording doesn't happen without clock.
2. Have you tried a fresh patch?
3. After you record a pattern, does it show up as a solid light on Masterizer page
4. What options are enabled on the melodizer? What mode at bottom? What scale even?
Thx. -

>1. inner loops (as above)
I agree
>2. left to right...
maybe remap midi assignments?
yes, you could remap the midi in the opposite order to fix that.
>3. i am not fully decided on this yet, but when i mute a looper pattern (in masterizer), i find that i want the affected tracks to keep playing (as a loop played normally) instead of stopping.
There was some discussion about this already. Enough people have asked for it to give it some more thought.
[edit] You can midi map to mute buttons. The thing is that the template we provide uses an standard rack for the loops and that does not allow independent mixing/muting send to different effects buses etc of the chains. If we change to using a drum rack you have way more options. I've done this in my local Live 8 template. Basically, we need to create a new improved template. I really hope I can do this for the release version.
>4. play backwards (as in backmask effect...
You can do this now but you need to use Sampler as Simpler doesn't have the option. Also the steps will move forward on the monome still while the sample plays backwards. When M4L comes out, we will try to come up with a component that gives us better support for playing samples in the context of looper.
> 5. variable quantization when playing with slices. or is this ableton-dependent?
It's controlled by 7up. Maybe more quantization options in general.
Thx for the feedback. All good ideas. -

Do you have one to try it on? If it does not work it would likely be because it can't handle our refresh rate with lots of blinking buttons. It doesn't work well on the Lemur for that reason. -

bar|none: thanks, glad to contribute even if just a little.
i played another 2 hours last night and had another idea. it is like in my #3 item except i think this is more important for me:
so i record a pattern on the loop recorder, pattern is playing. then i switch to looper mode. i find that i cannot stop the tracks where a pattern is playing using the subnav stop buttons. this makes the patterns hard to use when doing quick transitions on a song (e.g. buildup to chorus, breaking an intro) while still playing with the looper on some tracks, which i do a lot.
is this by design? i can imagine it might be difficult to implement this since there can be more than 1 track per pattern and more than 1 pattern per track. but what if, for example:
pattern 1 <-- tracks 1,2,5
pattern 2 <-- tracks 2,3,4
stop track 1: will stop tracks 2 and 5 as well
stop track 2: will stop ALL tracks (1 to 5)
stop track 3: will stop tracks 2 and 4 as well
etc etc.
this setup i can live with :) -

oh and also, i realize that there's so many midi mapping options possible with sevenup! could be overwhelming sometimes. and updating midi maps across multiple existing live projects will be a daunting task. (i should know, i have been to midi-mapping hell before and barely came out alive)
so i propose a live midi remote script for sevenup. this way updating midi maps would just involve editing the script. er, i think.
i can do some more research on how to go about this. i can read/write python a little so that should help...

>so i record a pattern on the loop recorder, pattern is playing. then i switch to looper mode. i find that i cannot stop the tracks where a pattern is playing using the subnav stop buttons.
Interesting...yeah you have to stop from the masterizer. Somehow I didn't really realize this before now. I have to look at the implementation. Good point though.
>so i propose a live midi remote script for sevenup.
Well I think we will probably go straight to M4L and bypass this altogether. That would completely remove all need for midi mappings and would be super clean. It's a lot of work but it would pay off. Started investigating already. It's not going to happen tomorrow, but it will likely happen.
[edit] Is it possible to simply write a midi remote script that uses the same messages we use right now? I admit I don't know a lot about them. That would be of value, but if it involves a huge rewrite then I think we should skip it.
@GetTheLEDOut
Thx! -
