**Update - version 2.0.4 available now. Bugfixes and autoconfigure has been added**
http://www.makingthenoise.com/sevenup/
SevenUp has been given a face lift and an organ replacement. Shit it's not even the same species anymore. It's some kind of hybrid Tiger-Jet-Ski colossus that ravages nearby villages. But in a good way. Like by solving tariff disputes and volunteering at the library.
In any case, a lot of work has gone into this and I want to thank Barnone especially for handling 100% of the Max/MSP work involved and really bringing this together.
Here are some new features to get your juices flowing:
-7up components install into your normal device library
-Drag and drop components to start using them
-Extensible components mean community members can build their own in Max
-Virtual midi no longer required
There are a couple known issues that we hope to flesh out in the near future so please be sure to read the docs. Happy monoming. -

BTW
THANK YOU!!!!!
I have it running right now and am playing with the step sequencer... this is what I have wanted since I first saw the monome! The only thing stopping me from ruling the universe at this exact moment is that I only have a 64...
Thank you again for the great work! -

Guys, this is SO good!
I am working with mtn and barnone on making this fully compatible with nonome but it will work out of the box if you're delicate with stepper mode (all the dim pads are where the data overflow is) until then :-) -

Are there any internal roadblocks for adding more than 2 melodizers? I haven't opened anything up yet..just thought I'd ask. Seems like now you could go nuts with multiple melodizers. :)
Also, while jamming with a melodizer today, I realized it's VERY fun and musical to recorded a pattern in the melodizer, then "jam" on top of this. Do you guys think a melodizer "overdub" mode is possible now with M4L? So for instance you record a part and if overdub is enabled, additional notes are written on top? (much like overdub mode in live when recording to a looping clip) -

@Emergency
I found an easy way to have multiple melodizers / over dub is to route the audio from your midi track to an audio track
You can then record your melodizer tracks with abletons built in quantization, loop it, and then route it to another track or turn off routing all together to jam over top -

- CommentTimeDec 1st 2009
as well... the pattern options for melodizer can be played over one another... and you can switch between them on the master control... so you could have 1 - 7 loops playing, and be jamming over top of that. Your only potential constraint would be if you were using a monophonic instrument. -

@making the noise.. (and sorry to everyone else for the spam, multiple trains of thought)
would it be possible to record the midi data being played by the melodizer / step sequencer... -

ah yes, I've done stuff like route audio all over the place, map buttons to record clips, etc etc.
The old 7up was somewhat restrictive because it required tons of routing, however a lot of clever DAW "hacks" were developed to increase the functionality..
BUT a lot of these ideas seem like they could leverage the power of m4l. -

You have 7 melodizer slots per melodizer, which means you can drag in 14 melodizer components and have them all playing different sounds or the same sound. Choose the appropriate "slot" from the pull down to focus it to that pattern.
You can even drop 2 or more into the same track on different slots to have 2 patterns associated with one sound. Basically an overdub using 2 patterns.
To record the midi (same with stepper), use 1 melodizer attached to the instrument you are playing and 1 dropped into a midi track by itself focused on the same "slot". You can now listen to the midi on the track that has the melodizer that has no instrument in it from another track and record it.
Remember that clip mode will trigger recording of slots if the track is set to record on launch. Bottom row stops the recording. -

Same question as emergencyofstate, but with Loopers. Is it possible to have multiple loopers? For Example 2 Loopers and 1 Melodizer, instead of the other way around? -
-
CommentAuthormakingthenoise
- CommentTimeDec 1st 2009
right now there's no way to change the overall hierarchy of the setup (mode 1 will always be Stepper, etc). But that's a natural progression of things with the modes being broken out into components. Definitely on the table but not there yet. -

Was curious if you had considered making some of the 7up components stand alone so that they could work on a thisInstance basis similar to what Stretta is doing...
If this would not be possible due to the way the software is organized... would it perhaps be possible to set up the main 7up module this way.
Currently the way 7up is set up it is not possible to turn it on and off without losing all of the recorded data... I know that you can store stuff as patch's and presets and then reload them... it just does not seem very plausable in a live setting to do every time I want to jump between multiple applications. -

Not at once, however there is a method of having multiple looper racks and dynamically switching them on the fly. It's probably going to take a video to show this, here are the basics.
1. Drag in 2 or more Loopers with associated racks.
2. Switch to "MASTER" mode and configure the loop settings on each one. After you are done, it would be wise to save the settings as a preset in case you screw up.
3. While playing you want to only have one Loopers power ON, the rest should be OFF. When a looper powers on in master mode it pushes all it's settings to the core. The core only uses 1 set of settings at one time.
To accomplish on the fly powering ON/OFF Loopers we create dummy clips on the looper tracks. The clips I name "Activate" "Deactivate", they map to the "SevenUpLooper/activate" automation parameter on each looper that is available from the "Clip automation" properties". This turns power on and off.
"Activate" clip should automate the power switch to ON, "Deactivate" to OFF.
NOTE: Seems the m4l has an issue (bug?) if you try to copy these clips to different tracks...bummer. You need to create them from scratch right now on each looper track.
4. Now create a scene using the dummy clips where scene launch triggers "Activate" on one looper, and "Deactivate" on the rest. Launching the scene will now switch racks and loop settings on the fly.
In the future I'm sure we or someone else will write a custom sample slicer component and maybe this will not be needed.
[edit] Need to use version 2.0.1 or greater for this to work. -

"Currently the way 7up is set up it is not possible to turn it on and off without losing all of the recorded data... "
If you save your settings as a patch and then save SevenUpCore as a preset, say "MyLiveSet2", now when you choose that preset, the patch will be automatically loaded at startup with the preset.
Make sure to resave the patch before exiting as we don't prompt you to. We did have a dialog pop up but it was annoying, so we removed it. -

holy shit, it took me an hour to get it up and running but this thing is amazing!!!
it´s like a dream came true, no hassle set up, instant recording, effects and everything, it´s oh so lovely ... thanks so much!
i hate to be the first but there´s a sync issue with the stepper, i think ... it´s exactly 1/16 in a bar to late, no matter what i do. i attached a pic where you can see it. it´s a straight 4 to floor beat, one kick and a hihat, presetsounds from the template.
cheers,

this sounds stupid, but herreinholt can you try clicking the stop button *twice*, then pressing play and seeing if the Stepper is in sync? -

Do you guys happen to have the documentation for using the melodizers with the other "Toolbar" functions? I'm sure you plan to put it in the "advanced functionality" area of the new doc page...
I'm eager to try clip launch. I only used the keyboard functionality of previous versions. -

Choose Keyboard/Position...to change modes, press the solid nav light twice while in Melodizer, the Keyboard will switch to a position bar "solid strip at bottom", then switch back again with another double tap of the solid nav light.
Using position bar, hold a chord in main melodizer area (try a piano or something polyphonic) and push different buttons in the bar. This transposes the chord by scale degree.
You can record a pattern and transpose it live as well. Turn "Transpose On" in melodizer settings. The numbers "Nope 1..7" in the settings are transpose groups, where patterns will transpose together in the same group". Great for monophonic lines as well. -
