sample drop!
http://post.monome.org/comments.php?DiscussionID=6525&page=4#Item_4
------------------------
Keepin it on from v1.0: http://post.monome.org/comments.php?DiscussionID=6287
I shot an email to three pops about this, and he's into it.
Here's the deal on twosies.
-- Everyone uploads TWO sound files (for vTWOpointOH!)
The first file should be strictly PERCUSSIVE and no more than 5 seconds long. Think individual drum samples, short and bombastic (or with some decay like a crash), but it doesn't have to be from a drum or kit.
The second sample should be MELODIC and under 30 seconds. This could be harmonic, droney, piano-liney, or whatever.. chunky.
Proposed deadlines are:
-- Samples In -- by Sunday December 13, 11:59pm
-- The Niceness (yo' trax!) -- by Sunday January 3, 11:59pm
These deadlines give us some more leniency for the holidays and whatnot.
Video and art policies are the same.
v3.0 will be in January if we can keep up the steam. if anyone's got proposals for sample concepts or themes or anything for 3.0, let's hear em! -

if you want an invite, let me know.. i don't feel like wave provides the right features to consolidate the sample library into a convenient zip. -

and im sure with time it will. -

I like the idea of concepts or themes. Not sure yet what I'd propose but I do like the goal. I will be thinking about it. -

Im in. Maybe consider soundcloud as a host? It has good commenting abilities and you can create playlists. Also, all forthcoming MCRP tracks can live there in a MEGA-PLAYLIST!!!!! Mwa ha ha ha! -

I'm in for another round. Don't sample as much as I should. This is good exercise.
I don't know if I like the one percussive, one melodic rule. It's restrictive in a way. But yeah, last time we were pretty limited on drum choices.
And I was the only one to use the Bambata sample! (used the hell out of it though.) -

drums were definitely limited last time, that's why i liked the idea of knowing what everyone was going to be sharing. -

yeah... this'll give us more options for sure.
+1 on the 1 drum sample, 1 melodic sample. -

does soundcloud provide the right tools to compile things into a zip? we could just start a wave, sending samples to one another, and you could flashgot all dl links to get all the stuff… uh, maybe not, too complicated. but i imagine there has to be a widget somewhere… or rather, there will be in a year or so. damn it.
whatev. i'm for sure down this time. winter break=(relatively) more time, enough time for musical madness. -

Idunno. I kinda felt like not knowing exactly what we were getting until the unzip was part of the fun.
Would a vocal sample (say someone talking) be considered melodic?
Whatever, I'm sure most of us on here can turn a sample of an elephant pissing on a tin shed into Spanish guitar if we really wanted to. -

maybe we could require everyone to submit either a melodic or percussion track, and also have the option to upload another random sample of their choice...? -

+1 for not knowing. My favorite aspect of this project was taking a sample that has absolutely no resemblance to a bass sound and making it a bass sound. That's the great thing about the tools at our fingertips.
I think that the goal of this project should be to challenge us. I think it might be good to hold to threes rule about not using your own sample as well. As for two samples, I think that's all good.
I think it would even be cool to restrict ourselves a little more by giving us a genre to attempt or we upload one rhythm sample and one sample from a particular genre. I don't know why but I keep wanting to say that we upload at least one Ennio Morricone sample. Maybe I just want to do something in that style right now. Ah well. -

heheh. i use a really awesome ennio morricone sample in my vass glenison sets..
agreed about challenging us.. i dunno how i feel about not using your own sample as a rule as much as a general principle.. it may just fit in perfectly, ya know?
> maybe we could require everyone to submit either a melodic or percussion track, and also have the option to upload another random sample of their choice...?
my only apprehension with that was getting a whole bunch of one, and not much of another... although that could have insane results.. and could be very challenging..
i'm inclined to say let's keep the one drum one melodic for 2.0, then do something like one drumORmelodic one random sample for 3.0.. if we're doing one a month, there'll definitely be time to get everyone's ideas in. -

we could also rotate who picks the rules. dosent have to be the same each time! soundcyst could take the lead on 2.0 and someone else could choose parameters for 3.0. keep it fresh, keep it challenging. -

i'm with watson.
i think the central point is that a drum sample and a melodic sample can be a huge number of things, point is to focus it down and ensure basic variety. telling me there are two samples, one drum one melodic tells me nothing about the actual samples i'm going to get. it's unspecific enough to work.
for example: i'm currently planning on dropping a recording of a choir in trace state for the melodic sample. is it melodic? not really. can you do cool things with it? hells yes. -

+1 for no rules, it will sort itself out, thats part of the fun, no judging of samples, thats the ultimate no frills way to keep it fresh...if no one uploads a drum sample one of the times, (highly unlikely) then so be it...do your best and cool stuff wiill still be made -

i like the idea of no rules on samples either, you could really make a drum beat out of any 2 or 3 sounds anyway. its repetition more so than kick, snare, hi-hat.
anyway, im down for round 2. soundcyst, im here for help but it looks like you've got it under control. im looking forward to being able to spend more time on the track and not the admin stuff. -

So clearly there is disagreement on rules/no rules, etc. I think that rotating the "theme" if you will, would give us an opportunity to both operate within a framework and then perhaps thesuperorganism can dictate the parameters of 3.0 and those might just be "no parameters".
Also, I think soundcyst's idea for a percussive sound and melodic sample are open-ended. Percussive: "it doesn't have to be from a drum or kit", and melodic: "This could be harmonic, droney, piano-liney, or whatever.. chunky". I think sursiks sample of a choir would be perfect for a "melodic" sample. Am I right? -
