I shot an email to three pops about this, and he's into it.

Here's the deal on twosies.

-- Everyone uploads TWO sound files (for vTWOpointOH!)

The first file should be strictly PERCUSSIVE and no more than 5 seconds long. Think individual drum samples, short and bombastic (or with some decay like a crash), but it doesn't have to be from a drum or kit.

The second sample should be MELODIC and under 30 seconds. This could be harmonic, droney, piano-liney, or whatever.. chunky.



Proposed deadlines are:

-- Samples In -- by Sunday December 13, 11:59pm

-- The Niceness (yo' trax!) -- by Sunday January 3, 11:59pm

These deadlines give us some more leniency for the holidays and whatnot.

Video and art policies are the same.

I don't know if I like the one percussive, one melodic rule. It's restrictive in a way. But yeah, last time we were pretty limited on drum choices.

And I was the only one to use the Bambata sample! I think that the goal of this project should be to challenge us. I think it might be good to hold to threes rule about not using your own sample as well. As for two samples, I think that's all good.

I think it would even be cool to restrict ourselves a little more by giving us a genre to attempt or we upload one rhythm sample and one sample from a particular genre. I don't know why but I keep wanting to say that we upload at least one Ennio Morricone sample. Maybe I just want to do something in that style right now. agreed about challenging us.. i dunno how i feel about not using your own sample as a rule as much as a general principle.. it may just fit in perfectly, ya know?

I really believe in using constraints to enhance/focus creativity. The fact that we don't have any control over what other people upload forces us to find new and interesting ways to make the sounds we want. Adding themes should help to keep things fresh and keep up the momentum.

no limits. the more the merrier.. yes, that means there will be a lot of samples. yes, that means that the resulting compilation will be lengthy, but an 80 minute compact disc is not one of our limitations here.

the more people get involved, the more fun we'll all have.

Regarding the size of the pack. I don't think we should make more than one song. i think the only danger is if people feel the urge to use a bit of every sample and so creating something overly dense.

if people are expected to show some restraint and only pick from a few of the available samples then i think we'll be fine.

from today (sunday) to saturday at 00:00. this would make the release available on sunday, and we could all make it a nice, peaceful, music filled sunday, marveling at what the community has created this time around.

...however, i hate to be the wet-blanket, but pre-1980s kinda takes the fun out of it for me... i like remixing other monomers' original work... i know some of us were alive before 1980 but it seems like it will actually force many of us to upload samples that aren't our own... i love sampling retro, but... it's been done.

(EDIT: maybe you could be lenient, and allow people to upload their own stuff, too?)

I am completely open to what others think about this. And if a good amount of people are against it then we can totally throw it out. It would be a larger challenge to find the sample but it would make the end product have a cool vintage feel, although cut up and messed with.

i like the pre-1980's idea. sure, it's been done, but that's not to say there's new things to do with it. we could perhaps do a bonus challenge: samples from pre-1940's. now that would be interesting. and since most of those samples are public domain, there's absolutely no question as to the legality!

yes, personally, i did not include the ones i recognized(but there were all kinds of drum-hits that were probably taken from somewhere else)... but it doesn't mean that it's not going to be proven later as infringing once it gains exposure(i guess we're assuming these will never gain that much exposure?... but i can't assume that...). and i know, people are also saying it doesn't infringe, but i don't think anyone actually knows that for sure. we're just hoping to get away with it.

also, a "derivative work" is relative to each case that's ever come before the courts. if you use enough of the work in a familiar way, it can be proven derivative:

it sounds like people are guessing at law based on hearsay and distant-observations of businesses that "got away with it". not a good way to go... but i'll just end my rant by saying, as someone who worked escalating user's "info." to [EDIT:] "appropriate authorities" [sorry, but i just realized i might not be allowed to say who by an NDA i signed...] after users committed various degrees of copyright and other infringements on youtube(where no one posted videos for any profit, either), just make sure you mash up beyond ALL recognition(and the monome-community will be safe(monome.org specifically) so long as anyone who hosts, only links on monome.org to their website, not to the downloads directly, which is what we're doing anyways...)

Arpshift was the primary application used on this. I also used four step sequencer pages in Pages for layering of beats. OK, enjoy.

the intro choir sound was stephenm's vocal sample put into kontakt, mapped across a midi keyboard and played back out. also with a liberal helping of verb/delay :)

here's the notes i sent over to kevin with sample origination/etc:

drums were done in battery, the rest with kontakt and various effects. intro is "stephenm_melodic" into "v2 rross101 melody". ran it through "the finger" to make the crazy feedback transition part. the drums are slices from perc samples submitted by: glia (4), iamgenko (1), jimdrake (3), omniverse (2), psalm (4), raja (2), soundcyst (1), sursiks (3), and uppercut (2). the other instruments that come in here: electronic piano sound from iamgenko, bass from feedingbirds, and voice samples from rross101 and stephenm, and spacy melody sounds from shvanbommel at the end.

i am genko, yours was one of my favorites in v1(especially the title, haha), this track, too, shows alot of depth and thought. real fluid(in both groove and overall structure).

rross101, (you posted before this edit so...) nice choice to use acoustic samples... gave it some good roomy breadth... smooth beat, too, steps really well. definitely one of my favorites this time round.

hypno - very good as well. Liked the tribal beats at the beginning and at 2mins in. Nice use of hi bongo.

@superorganism - I totally agree. These tracks are less hard hitting and more ambient, acoustic and steady. I mean, my first song for V1 was ALL beat and this time around I definitely focused more on melody. Not sure why. I would guess it all comes down to the samples. There was more variety here and more choice for percussion. Last time we had three beats and one many of us tended to lean towards was the breakbeat which inevitably increases tempo. Also, there were some very pretty piano and ambient bass sounds on this one too.

Nevertheless, It's all really interesting for me to hear all these different interpretations concocted from the same material. egohygiene, love that subtle glitchy intro. things explode in the middle there, especially in volume, didn't quite expect that... but i kinda like how it subsides again... you build it up to break it down. nice.

thesuperorganism, you asked about my remix: ya, only MonoMahna was used. there are sequencers in MonoMahna so i could at least re-sequence everyone's loops right there within the app(i mean, in a stored preset fashion), but ya, i worked all within the app to create a structured improv.

@egon77... as far as beat creation... I used a bunch of things

#1> took all the one shot samples and randomly filled up a drum rack - then played them using polynome 64

#2> then took a 4 bar beat sample and used a bunch of unlinked envelopes - pan, pitch and sample offset

#3> then found a sample with a bass drum sound I liked - sliced it into a midi and played in a straight bass drum beat using pitches

Outside of that my only idea is that we host the tracks on some site (I might get that together) meant just for V3. And if they make us take it down then we take it down and chalk it up to experience. I still haven't emailed my friend at Disney but I will.

I am kind of expecting bad news from her because I usually deal with her regarding pieces that I edit for Disney and in my experience she plays most everything on the safe side. Disney's got a lot more liability then a bunch of dudes making free music but nevertheless. My hope is that she says to me "If they find out about it, all they will make you do is take it down" and not "you might be prosecuted"

I am sure that there is some disclaimer that could at LEAST protect us from prosecution.

Do you have a site or web design skills? I did see in your earlier post that you had an interest in hosting the next one and I don't see why we both can't work on it. Let's say, if your up to it, we basically help each other out in the creation of it. Three has his whole site as well and I would love to give him the choice as well to have it on his site but we can offer the alternative. Plus, we could create the interim site for this period of submissions and uploads.

I have created a couple flash sites before but it was a few versions ago. I do have experience in most of the adobe design stuff. I work in after effects almost on a daily basis.

This track was my entry to the MCRP2 (Monome Community Remix Project), which was the second in a series of proto-anarchist sample-swap ping-pong sessions.

Anyways, I wanted to ask a couple of you some questions on your tracks, if that's cool

Visnin - I love the distortion sound at the end of your track! How did you do that? It sounds like very analog distortion so I was wondering if you went through some guitar pedals or something. It also made me think of the use of feedback, like what would it sound like if you recorded your drumtrack or something by sending them out the speakers and back in through a microphone that was also hearing itself. While you recorded it you could adjust the microphones monitoring levels on the fly to bring the feed back in and out. Any way, I love the sound.

Omniverse, your song is such a long one and goes through many different beats using lots of our samples and yet it feels very much like one song and not a medley. What was your workflow like on that one? Did it start at the beginning or in the middle somewhere? What sample did you spring from?

and Pirxthepilot, I loved the way you used the rross vocal sample. I tried blending it into my song put couldn't control the variations in pitch. How did you use that sample?

On mine, as far as mix goes, I actually didn't put a bit of compression on it. My springboard sample was Three's orchestral one and for awhile the whole piece contained those hits. I also had that track duplicated with a heavy reverb plug on it. It all became very muddy very quickly. Eventually, I started hating the reverb and even hearing the hits at the beginning. But, in the end I think it was because there's not a lot of grit in the samples and each one kind of has their place alone in the spectrum, so the drums still cut through for the most part. I used the default "a bit warmer" saturator in live on each track, and an EQ8 on the drum/percussion track with -6 dB at 300 Hz (Q at 2.82). Then I used a mastering chain that has two dynamic tubes, a saturator, a multiband compressor (set at defaults), and a limiter.

(the main groove is actually just my own cut and paste by hand... but for some variations on the non-beat tracks(the higher melodic stuff), i used bbcut because i figured why do so much by ear-and-hand when i can also do it by math(ya, could've used monomahna, was learning sc... also, got lazy, hehe)... there's also alot of FFT-convolution via max in there...)

Thanks in regards to the mix complement. Sometimes I'm lucky. I was lucky to have chosen three's sample as my guide for the melody. Then I could add in all the complements to match and then strip the original sample out. Kinda like the support for an archway. You need it for the construction but after you've finished you remove it. As for mix, the end of my track gets a little muddy but I was okay with it. I just rode the levels just slightly to say here I want to hear more piano and then here I want the strings to rise over that and then dip the strings for a little more piano here. Compression in general can sometimes confuse me. It's sort of easy to go overboard.

Anyway, great to see the video. I will try to make it a personal goal to practice more performance in the creation of the next one, V3.
