Hey guys,
I've been thinking about a monome but I wanted to give it a shot first, so I rigged up a nice emulator with a more tangible interface than the one in the base set, ie. the keyboard. It becomes a 32 key monome (8x4). Someone else did this, I think, but it didn't really work out for me, so I thought I'd share my results:

Hopefully I can get my hands on one of these soon and write come nice tools :) -

looks cool.
however, the 40h is 40 in hexadecimal, translating to 64 in decimal. 32h (i.e. 32 in hex) translates to 50 in decimal.
i think you meant 20h.
edit - also, there's the issue of ghosting, which keyboards don't usually address.
i can't find it using google (the thread was on the old forum), but someone took two old keyboards and put them into a box and made them into a makeshift 40h by permanently strapping the shift key on the lower keyboard down. -

Ah, well that's what the 'h' is for then. Silly me.
As for the ghosting, at some point I may have noticed it but probably didn't realize. Obviously it's not perfect, but it's still fun to use in the meantime.
edit- I added base conversion to the titlebar just to be accurate; the 32h is now known as the poor-mans-20h :) -

yeah, the ghosting will really only affect you if you're holding down a bunch of buttons at the same time. for simple single presses, or if you're sticking to the same row, there probably won't be any noticeable difference.
they do make keyboards that have diodes in them to be anti ghosting though..
here is one [particularly ugly, imo] incarnation: http://www.razerzone.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=40 -

really really nice documentation!
my original fake 40h is really dysfunctional, but it's by no means "intentionally crippled." i forgot about that text, and it seems that i was in some sort of annoying mood. the truth is that i wanted to highlight the incredibly poor representation of the hardware. -

nice work :)
now make a version for this keyboard: http://luxiium.com/en/product_01.php
(before anyone asks I cant find any resellers for it or a $ price or any docs on how to drive the lights :( ) -

@tehn: first, thanks :) second, yea, I figured it wasn't *truly* intentional. If I put that much work into a device like that, though, I probably would have intentionally crippled the emulator if it didn't do the device any justice-- but that's me.
keyboards:
Well the optimus is a little overkill since you would just need to change the colours, not the image displays. I did actually think about that one. The Luxiium looks way cooler though-- but I'd bet it costs more than a 40h, so what's the point?
Let's switch it up and turn the monome into a keyboard instead!
edit- thanks for changing the thread topic btw, I'm slightly less embarrassed to have missed the hex reference now. -

yeah, the 128 would make a great keyboard... I would love to see that realized. -
