I would like to make a detachable knob box for my recently completed starfire 128. I figure 4-6 pots. I would also like to place some LEDS underneath the knobs themselves and have them pulse to the tempo in live. I understand the recent arduinome firmware has code for hooking up to the ADC spots on the board so I think Im set for the pots. My question is how to read the tempo from Live and have it control the PWM output to pulse the LEDs like this http://principialabs.com/arduino-pulse-width-modulation/
I assume this would require a small MAX app that updates the "int time=" value in arduinome firmware

So... Since I've burned one of my starfire AIO board, I replaced it with an arduino+unsped in my 256.... It works, but ... hmmmm .... (<< in-satisfaction)

But, reading bartaug's post (found here : http://post.monome.org/comments.php?DiscussionID=6145&page=3#Item_12 ) made me want to try his hack with a starfire board as first shield, and an unsped one as second

I managed to follow instructions (from custardweasel's post) and get something that barely displays the boot pattern on both button pads, so i really think it is doable

Has anyone managed to do the original bartaug hack on the 128 using regular unsped shields?
Has anyone dared attempt this mix before ?

One note about the original hack, if i understand correctly, bartaug's original hack was adapted to the unsped shields at some point in the thread.. He also mentions possible need to adapt the firmware pins to reflect unsped pin-outs... But, on sourceforge, the hex you find as firmware isn't implied to work with the unsped shields... Or not..
Second, based on custardweasel's reply and blog article ( http://herringson.com/?page_id=241 ), the pin-outs is quite different from the one bartaug suggests.... So which is right ? ;)

Hopping this thread will give ideas to the most adventurous amongst us and open new doors to 128's building :p

Digital is good but I can't live without analog.
So I've decided to add some potentiometer to my arduinome, and with "some" I mean more than 4! :)

cd4067 is an analog multiplexer 100% arduino compatible, it can manage 16 adc with 4 digital pins and 1 analog input only.

Unsped shields don't use the 6 arduino's analog in, so I've decided to use 5 of them to drive my cd4067.

First, I had to make a little module to add cd4067 to my arduinome, I drawed a schematic of that module, you can find it in the attachment.

Second, I had to modify ArduinomeFirmware to make it capable to manage the new module.
http://itp.nyu.edu/physcomp/Tutorials/Multiplexer was usefull and I've only adapted that code.
In the attachment there's that sketch, all changes are commented. :)

Third, I had to modify ArduinomeSerial to manage the new protocol. Monome SerialProtocol can manage 4 adc only because it reserves 2 bit only to the port camp. With 16 adc I need 4 bits, so I taked 2 from the value camp.
It works, but now my adc can store values from 0 to 254 only, anyway it's good enough for me!
(See http://docs.monome.org/doku.php?id=tech:protocol:40h to understand it.)

That changes requires the editing of 3 files only: message.c (lines 28 and 30), message.h (lines 67, 68, 69) and ApplicationController.mm (line 193).
Again, you can find the edited versions in the attachment, and all edits are commented.

I'm not a programmer, (I'm learning C reading ArduinomeSerial :D) and this isn't a patch (I don't know how to make one!), maybe it's an hack. A brute hack considering I've commented the firmware's lines that control the adc's on/off state, so I don't have to add 16 switch to the main window (I don't know how to add a switch too :) ).
It would be nice to add a switch that can enable the x16adc mod (yes, I call all this x16adc mod) to the next Arduinome Firmware/Serial release but I don't know if that mod is so intresting for other users. :)

The thing works, but is not perfect. The modifications are crude and some error can occur. For example some times pots starts to continuously send values ant I don't know why.
I've tested it on mac only, I don't use windows but it should work on it.
I hope that someone interested in the mod can help me to refine it.

There's a picture of my modded arduinome too, so you can see how nice it is! :)

Finally, I want to thank Brian and Kelly because they have make all this open source (and possible), unsped and all the arduinome staff/enthusiasts, and ucacjbs that drived me when I asked some questions about the project.

Ciao.

			Hey,

So like all of us, i've spent absurdist amounts of time researching things before putting down some cashmoney to build an arduinome or possibly try to get a monome kit in july. but i have some questions that I can't quite figure out.

If i were to build an arduinome, i'd like to be use livid's buttons (smaller, supposedly more precise) found here http://lividshop.com/builder/rubber-key-pads-8x8.html AND then use there i think new pcbs for it here: http://lividshop.com/builder/byob-push-small.html

if i do do this what exactly changes in terms of the logic board stuff? can i still use the parts list on the flipmu site: http://flipmu.com/work/arduinome/hardware/ ?

if not, what do i need to get differently?

and then in terms of the arduino shield, do i build exactly the same way all the sparkfun build logs describe? get one of unsped's shields? or bibio's and go from there? is all the build the same if all i'm changing is the buttons/pcb?

finally, i've been wanting to get an arduino for a long time now and was thinking if i go the arduinome route, i can just detach it from the arduinome stuff and use it as a normal arduino whenever i wanted to? is this possible too?

if anyone could answer all my questions i would be unbelievable appreciative, i really am quite a n00b but want to get my hands dirty quick!

I guess i'm asking ultimately because if I do have to change a lot to use the livid buttons and i really can't detach it from the arduino itself whenever i wanted to.... i might just really try to get a monome kit when they come out again (later in july)

thanks so much in advance
